Eileen O’Connor Support Classes at Holy Cross

Personalised learning. A shared school community.

At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, Kincumber, our Eileen O’Connor Support Classes combine specialised educational support with everyday participation in our school community.

Children in our Support Classes are very much part of Holy Cross. They share all recess and lunch breaks and school events with their peers, creating opportunities to build friendships, share experiences and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Grounded in Catholic values, our approach recognises the dignity, gifts and potential of every child. Each student’s needs, strengths and aspirations are at the centre of their learning.

What is an Eileen O’Connor Support Class?

Eileen O’Connor Support Classes are located within existing Catholic Schools Broken Bay schools. They offer smaller class sizes, dedicated teachers and teaching assistants, and individualised teaching programs tailored to each student’s strengths, goals and learning needs.

At Holy Cross, this means children can access specialised support while being part of a wider primary school community.

Who are the classes for?

The classes support students with a diagnosis of Autism and/or an Intellectual Disability who require a more individualised learning environment and targeted educational support.

Placement is guided by Eileen O’Connor Catholic School’s enrolment criteria, with consideration given to how a child’s disability impacts their learning and participation, and the supports they require.

Families are encouraged to speak with the Eileen O’Connor team about their child’s needs and the available educational options.

How will my child’s learning be supported?

Learning programs follow the outcomes and content of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabuses, with teaching personalised to each student.

Smaller classes and dedicated staff support individualised instruction, appropriate adjustments and high expectations for learning and achievement. Programs build on what each child can do and support progress towards meaningful learning goals.

Will my child participate in Holy Cross school life?

Yes. Students in our Support Classes belong to the Holy Cross community and share all breaks and school events with their peers.

From time together in the playground to school celebrations and community gatherings, these shared experiences help children form friendships and connections across the school.

Students also wear the Holy Cross school uniform.

Can my child access mainstream classroom learning?

Opportunities to participate in mainstream classes are guided by each student’s individual learning goals and readiness.

Where appropriate, a transition into a mainstream classroom may be considered. These transitions are carefully planned, monitored and supported, with the child’s needs at the centre of decisions.

How are families involved?

Families bring essential knowledge of their child’s strengths, needs and aspirations. Strong partnerships between families and educators help shape the support each student receives and create the best conditions for learning, wellbeing and participation.

We value listening, trust and working together as children grow and their needs change.
